Nepal finish fourth after defeat
Samiullah Shinwari played a heroic knock to guide Afghanistan to a three-wicket win over Nepal in the third-place playoff of the ACC Trophy Elite 2008 at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday.
After the batting failure in the semifinal match against UAE on Friday, Nepal made 210/8 after electing to bat first and looked set for victory having reduced Afghanistan to 100/6 in 22.3 overs. But Shinwari added 59 runs for the seventh wicket with No 6 Mohammed Nabi (55 off 56) and unbeaten 54 runs with Ahmad Shah Ahmadi (26 off 27) as Afghanistan inflicted the third consecutive one-day defeat in as many matches on Nepal having defeated it at the same stage in the 2006 edition of the tournament and in the WCL Div 5 semifinal in Jersey earlier this year.
Paras Khadka provided double break for Nepal in the eighth over dismissing the Afghan openers Nowroz Mangal (20 off 22) and Shafiqulah Shafaq (27 off 23) off the second and fifth ball after Afghanistan made flying start to its run-chase adding 49 runs.
Shakti Gauchan then bowled No 4 Karim Sadiq for a duck two overs later and when Paras dismissed No 5 Asghar Stanikzai (16 off 22), and Raj Kumar Pradhan dismissed No 3 Noor ul Haq (7 of 33) and No 7 Raees Ahmadzai (4 off 13), Nepal looked set for a comfortable victory.
But Nabi continued to play aggressively and patient Shinwary played a perfect foil to thwart Nepal. Even when Sanjam Regmi dismissed Nabi after his fiery knock studded with four boundaries and two sixes, Nepal still looked favorite. But No 9 Ahmadi was allowed to play with freedom while Shinwari calmly accumulated the runs to guide Afghanistan home with 10 balls to spare as captain Binod Das failed to prize out the much-needed breakthrough.
Earlier, opener Kanishka Chaugain topscored with 43 and most of the other batsmen made useful contributions to take Nepal to 210. Opener Paresh Lohani made 26 off 39 balls with five fours as Nepal added 52 runs for the first wicket in 10.5 overs to vindicate the skipper’s decision to bat first.
Kanishka was the second batsman to fall at 87 in the 21st over after hitting seven fours in his 63-ball knock.
Sharad Vesawkar (19 off 47), Paras (22 off 29), Gyanendra Malla (21 off 22), Mehboob Alam (12 off 23) and Mahesh Chhetri (29 off 43) all got out after getting starts but Nepal still managed to put up a decent total with Binod making unbeaten 13 off 16 and Sanjam remaining not out on 12 off 15.
But the inability of dislodging the lower order batsmen ensured that Nepal lost the match pretty easily in the end.

UAE finish second in the group with 6 points. Afghanistan topped the group with also 6 points because of the net run rate. They will face second of the group B Hongkong in the semi. Nepal confirm place for Semi
The results on Tuesday confirmed semifinal berth for Nepal and United Arab Emirates (UAE) while Hong Kong and Afghanistan have a foot into the semifinal going into the last round of match on Wednesday.
Nepal’s qualification was confirmed after Qatar beat Kuwait by 24 runs. With the loss, Kuwait chances’ of gaining three wins faded away and now it’s only Hong Kong that can have three wins in four matches while Nepal has won all three matches.
UAE qualified after beating hosts Malaysia by 57 runs - their third win since losing to Saudi Arabia in the first match. From their group, Afghanistan has almost ensured it’s place in the semifinal with two wins from three matches. They have a very good run-rate that if they defeat Bahrain on Wednesday, they will proceed at the group leader while UAE will be runners-up.
Even if Afghanistan loses, they can proceed on better run rate.
In Group B, Hong Kong is likely qualifier. They have a match against Singapore winning which they can qualify without any hassle. If they lose, they can still qualify on run-rate.

Qatar have no answer to Nepal
My website
Man of the match Shakti
Nepal got yet another victory in ACC Elite trophy. Qatar decided to bat first after winning the toss.It is proving to be the good decision but Nepal got first wicket after 46 runs.Afterwards wickets keep on falling on regular intervals and Qatar were restricted to the total of 171 off 47.2 overs. Basanta Regmi and Shakti Gauchan took 3 wickets each.
In reply Nepal got poor start. They lost opener Paresh Lohani in fifth ball of the first over.At one time Nepal were 46 for 3. Then inform batsman Sarad and Gyanendra Malla took responsibility. Sarad scored 51 from 104 balls and Gyanendra scored 76 from 82. They batted till the end and Nepal got the target in 37.3 overs.
Shakti Gauchan became the Man of the Match for his economical bowling. He gave only 25 runs in his spell of 10 overs taking 3 wickets.Nepal will face Singapore on Monday.
Happy with the win, Nepal’s coach Roy Luke Dias said all the players needed to deliver. “Like Sharad, Basanta, Gyanendra and Shakti, other players also need to perform well,” he said. Team manager Pawan Agrawal praised the players’ patience. “The boys not only performed well but also did not lose concentration even under the pressure situation,” said the former national team captain Agrawal.

Nepal got rocking start

Nepal, disciplined in batting, bowling and fielding took advantage of every Hong Kong error to win their ACC Trophy opener at the Selangor Turf Club by 44 runs. “We just didn’t turn up today,” said Hong Kong coach Aftab Habib. Nepal’s margin of victory pretty much equated to the number of runs Hong Kong conceded with their lackadaisical fielding. Sharad Vesawkar hits out for Nepal When they were good – Nadeem Ahmed’s slow left arm spin, the boundaries from Butt Hussain, Moner Ahmed, Ilyas Gul, Najeeb Amar and the Ahmed brothers – Hong Kong were very good. When they were bad they were terrible. Up against a well-grooved unit like Nepal, a team has to be its best. Hong Kong, right after their creditable performance in the Asia Cup let the game slip away from them in the second over of the day. Nepal had potentially given Hong Kong a chance to dictate the course of the match by choosing to bat on a wicket dampened by heavy atmospheric conditions. With a wicket lost in the first over (Kanishka Chaugai) to a ball that kept low, Nepal were indeed under pressure. Zain Abbas’s 20-run over which followed lifted that and Paresh Lohani and Sharad Vesawkar were untroubled throughout their 96-run partnership for the second wicket. Butt Hussain catches Mahaboob Alam Two dropped catches and general lack of support for the bowlers along with over-attacking field placing meant that Nepal always had a way to release any pressure building up. Vesawkar was deceived by a beauty from Nadeem Ahmed as he came down the wicket - the ball of the day – and was stumped for 48. Lohani fell three balls later to the crafty Moner Ahmed and the game still hadn’t gone completely away from Hong Kong yet. Nadeem Ahmed bowled beautifully, without much luck, for Hong Kong Nepal’s Paras Khadka made sure it did. Paras Khadka He played beautifully for his 81 – a cautious start, blossoming into an audacious display of power-hitting. He was out at the end of the 48th over with Nepal on 230. Hong Kong had made it too easy for Nepal. “The only time our batsmen got out was when they played shots outside the ‘V’’ said Nepal’s coach Roy Dias, “we gave our wickets away.” Nepal – one dropped chance aside - were close to immaculate in the field. Hong Kong’s schizophrenic cricket continued when they batted. Nadeem Ahmed – opening for the first time for his country – played some spanking drives before he rather tamely scooped a cut to point. Butt Hussain, normally the biggest of hitters, had even his coach bemused by taking 16 balls to get off the mark. Countless times Hussain walked down the wicket only to play a defensive stroke; when he did truly liberate himself he hit the sweetest of sixes right over the head of long-on. He reached his 50 with a six and was stumped the ball after. Batting at 10, Ilyas Gul with 18 in the penultimate over showed what could have been done earlier. Hong Kong didn’t lose by much in the end but they lost the match very early. Nepal won the second practice match
KATHMANDU, July 18 - Nepal won the second practice cricket match in Sri Lanka defeating Sri Lanka Board XI team by four wickets at the World Bens Club Ground, Colombo on Friday.
Electing to bat first, the host team scored 173 in 49.2 overs - the target Nepal achieved in the 40th over losing six wickets. On Thursday, Nepal defeated Sri Lanka Cricket Colts XI by two runs in a 45-over match.
For Friday’s victory, Kanishka Chaugai, who had led Nepal U-19 team to plate championship victory in the island country two years ago, scored 62 runs while Shakti Gauchan got 47 runs. Vice-captain Paras Khadka played a handy knock of 26 runs.
Captain Binod Das led the bowling by example taking three wickets for 28 runs in his 10 overs while Sarad Vesawkar, who claimed four wickets on Thursday, took two wickets. Paras and Raj Kumar Pradhan each grabbed a wicket as Nepal inflicted three run outs.
Nepal scheduled to play in the ACC Elite Cup 2008 in Malaysia from July 25 will play its last practice match on Monday.
Veshwakar's allround performance give victory in first practise match
KATHMANDU, July 17 - Sharad Vesawkar put up an all-round show as Nepal edged Sri Lanka Cricket Board Colts XI by two runs in a practice match played at the St Sebastian College Ground on Thursday.
Vesawkar made a classy fifty as Nepal made 248/7 in 45 overs after being put in to bat and then returned with the cherry to scalp four wickets to restrict the Lankans to 246/8 in 45 overs. Nepal owed the big score to a solid 78-run opening start provided by Mahesh Chhetri and Kaniska Chaugain. Chhetri made 52 off 66 balls while Chaugain, making a come back after returning from the United States on a holiday, hit 43 off 55 with five fours and a six.
After the fall of openers and Dipendra Chaudhary (0), Vesawkar forged up a crucial partnership with Gyanendra Malla, who made 29 off 24 with a boundary and two sixes, to maintain the momentum. Vesawkar hit three fours and one six in his unbeaten 61-ball innings of 54. Allrounder Paras Khadka (26 off 30) and Shakti Gauchan (28* off 27) then gave Vesawkar company to build up a formidable total. Mehboob Alam (1) and Basanta Regmi (0) were the other batsmen who got chance to bat. Haroon Majood took 4/58 in nine overs for the Lankan side.
Chasing the imposing target, the Lankans also made a great start with openers Trevin Fernando (45 off 71) and Rajitha Mendis (51 off 50) adding 88 runs in 17 overs. But Vesawkar turned up with a brilliant nine-over spell taking 4/45 to fashion the narrow win.
Sanjam Regmi and Paras were the other wicket-takers getting a wicket each for Nepal which is preparing for the ACC Elite Cup to be held in Malaysia later this month.

NEPAL FINISH THIRD IN WCL DIV 5 AFTER COMPREHENSIEVE VICTORY AGAINST USA

WORLD CUP REMAINS DREAM

Semi-final line up is decided
29 May 2008
Four teams reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 (WCL Div. 5) in Jersey on Thursday but the quartet all know one thing: only two of them can go forward to Division 4 and the next stage of qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
The final four from the 12 teams that started the event are hosts Jersey, the USA, Nepal and Afghanistan with the semi-finals pairings matching up Jersey and the USA with Nepal facing off against Afghanistan.
The winners of Friday’s matches will not only progress through to Saturday’s final but will also join Hong Kong, Fiji, Tanzania and Italy in the six-team ICC WCL Div. 4 set for the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam from 4 to 11 October.
Out of the four matches rescheduled for Thursday, the games between Nepal and the USA and Mozambique and Vanuatu were abandoned due to persistent rain while in the other two matches, Singapore beat Japan by 52 runs while using the Duckworth-Lewis scoring method and Germany defeated Norway by six wickets.
Singapore, needing to beat Japan by a huge margin to leapfrog Afghanistan on net run-rate, was out of contention for a place in the semi-final after it was restricted to 201 all out in 35.4 overs after being put into bat.
A 52-run victory only earned it third place in Group B behind Jersey and Afghanistan.
Nepal topped Group A after its match against the USA was abandoned due to rain at the Farmers CC. Nepal, batting first, was restricted to 182 all out in 50 overs and before the USA could start its target chase, rain came down to force a no-result.
Nepal captain Binod Kumar Das said his team was confident ahead of its semi-final against Afghanistan. “We are upbeat as we have been playing good cricket. As a team we are very confident of doing well in the semi-final.
“One thing we know about Afghanistan is it is inconsistent. It can be world beaters one day and inconsistent other days, so we hope we can have a good day against it.”
Das added: “We are not very aware of these things right now as our focus is on the cricket but we heard yesterday that the country was declared a republic so we are proud of that. The people of Nepal wanted that to happen and if we win this tournament and come back home with the trophy we are going to dedicate the win to the people.”
Afghanistan captain Norooz Khan Mangal hoped his team would learn from its mistakes and put up an improved performance on Friday. “We are not short of any confidence. The biggest motivation for us ahead of tomorrow’s match is if we win it, we will take a big step forward in our quest to play in the World Cup.
“Every team needs time to adjust to new conditions and after playing four matches here, we know what we need to do tomorrow to swing the match in our favour. If experience is on Nepal’s side, then talent and potential is on our side and tomorrow we just need to pull together a good team effort.”
The USA captain Steve Massiah said his team was looking ahead at Friday’s semi-final against Jersey with great anticipation. “It is something to look forward to as if we want to move forward from this tournament into the other league and get to the World Cup then we have look to tomorrow’s game with great anticipation.
“It will be a tough test as Jersey was unbeaten in the preliminary rounds. As both the teams are in good form, I am sure we will have a good game of cricket.”
Massiah said he was pleased with the performance of his team so far but warned his side of complacency. “It would be unfair to the guys not to be pleased after getting a perfect four from four.
“We do not fear any opposition and we just try to concentrate on our strengths and realise if we play to our full potential then we will be a hard team to beat. But we have to guard against complacency.”
Jersey captain Mathew Hague said: “It should be a really good game as the USA has been in good form and so have we. There is a lot to play for and to get into the final and go to Tanzania would be something really special so we’ll all look forward to it and it should be great.”
Hague acknowledged home advantage would be useful, but played down the fact that it would be a big advantage. “I suppose it helps a little bit but all the teams have played over here for a few games now so they should know the conditions.

NEPAL WITH A GREAT START
On their way to Jersey for the World Cricket League Division 5, Nepal stopped at Guernsey for two-friendly matches both of which they won comfortably.
Nepal beat Bahamas by 201 runs before beating hosts Guernsey by 70 runs. Nepal scored 209/7 in 50 overs and bowled out Guernsey for 139.
Against Guernsey, Nepal were at one stage in the mire at 65 for 5 against some excellent Guernsey bowling. They were rescued by a partnership of 103 between Sarad Veswakar and Mehboob Alam, the latter providing the impetus with 45 off 59 balls with Veswakar making 72 from 139 balls.
Basant Regmi remained unbeaten on 20 while Binod Das got 15 not out.
Guernsey were well aware of the potency of Nepal’s seam attack and Alam struck immediately with the wicket of Mark Jefferies with one of his big inswingers. The wickets of Smit, Oliver and Ravenscroft followed quickly and Guernsey were soon four down with only 40 on the board.
Skipper Stuart Le Prevost with a hard fought 41 and Jeremy Frith with 24 steadied the ship and were rebuilding nicely before the injured Frith, batting with a runner, was run out. Le Prevost kept going and appeared unlucky to be given leg before. With his dismissal the home side’s chances were fading and Rajkumar Pradhan’s legbreaks wrapped things up with 4 for 36.
Mehboob and Paras Khadka each took two wickets.
The match was a very useful exercise for both teams. Guernsey competed very well and the real difference between the two sides was the sheer quality of Nepal’s seam attack which could be too much for most of their opponents in Jersey.
Nepal knew that they had been tested by a decent Guernsey side seeking to demonstrate that it would not be out of its depth at WCL Division 5 level. The massive gulf between these two teams and the Bahamas suggests that the Bahamas will struggle in Jersey and that Nepal will be strongly fancied to reach the final. Bahamas lost to Guernsey too.
Earlier, Nepal crushed the Bahamas by 201 runs at the Port Soif ground.
Nepal batted first and made 272 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs. Paras Khadka top scored with an unbeaten 63 while Shakti Gauchan with 50 and Gyanandra Malla with 48 were the other main contributors.
G Armstrong (2 for 19) and N Ekanyake (2 for 42) returned the best figures for the Bahamas.
The Bahamas got off to an awful start and were 6 for 3 after 4 overs. Then 60 for 6 before being dismissed for 71 in 31 overs. C Atkinson (19) and M Ford (18) were their top scorers as Mehaboob Alab (2 for 16 in 6 overs), Binod Das (2 for 20 in 6 overs) and Rajkumar Pradam (3 for 19 in 9.4 overs) ran through them.

Nepal Grab an amazing win
Spinners helped Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) XI registered an upset victory over visiting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy in the final of three one-day matches at the TU Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Brought in after the visitors hit 47 runs of first two overs while chasing lowly 136 for victory, the spinners did the trick for Nepal and the stand-in captain Paras Khadka walked away with praise for his experimental decisions that proved successful.
PBC Academy were bowled out for 121 in 28.3 overs with off-spinner Sanjam Regmi emerging the hero with a more than impressive figure of 8.3-4-6-5. Basant Regmi took three for 28 in 8 overs while Shakti Gauchan and Sarad Vesawkar each grabbed a wicket.
Ahmed Shahzad hit pacer Amrit Bhattarai for five fours in the first over while his partner Raheel Majeed hit four boundaries and a six off Dhirendra Chand in the second over that also included a bye four. With 47/0 after 12 balls, PCB looked like cruising to a quick victory before lunch but Paras brought in Shakti and Basant.
Shakti got Majeed (27 off 14 with five fours and a six) in the last over before lunch and Shahzad (32 off 25 with seven fours) holed out one off Basant to Sarad in the first over after lunch to make it 65/2. Six balls later, Basant claimed Khurram Manzoor (1) to make it 76/3 and it was splendid bowling of Sanjam then after.
Pakistanis continued trying to be aggressive while Sanjam’s turn along with innovative field placing by Paras checked runs. Captain Khalid Latif was trapped leg-before at 20 off 22 by Sanjam and he was the third and last man to score in double-digit.
The PCB Academy ended at 121 – 15 runs short of CAN XI’s score after Sanjam got Sohail Khan (6) caught by Sarad and thousands of fans stormed into field to celebrate the amazing comeback victory.
Earlier, Paras won the toss and elected to bat first. Playing without regular captain Binod Das and star allrounder Mehboob Alam, Nepali team was pegged down right from second over when Gyanendra Malla was trapped by Mohamad Aamir.
Aamir, playing his first match on the tour, got five of first six wickets – Paresh Lohani (11) falling to Wahab Riaz to wreck the innings. Nepal went down to 45/6 in 12th over and it looked like it was heading for an embarrassing batting performance before Shakti Guachan rescued the team.
Shakti stayed cool and partnered Mahesh Regmi for 56 runs taking Nepal past three-digit before Mahesh, who was dropped down the order, fell to Imad Wasim, He scored 20 off 50 balls with a four.
Sanjam Regmi (5) and Amrit Bhattarai (6) stayed long enough to help Shakti complete a half-century, the lone by Nepali batsman in the series. Shakti’s unbeaten 50 was scored in 109 balls with five fours and a six. Aamir was pick of te bowler with 5/28 while Shahzad took 2/18 off his seven overs.

CAN XI LOST FIRST MATCH
May 08, 2008 WCL Div V
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy registered an easy seven-wicket victory in a rain-interrupted match against Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) XI at the TU Cricket Ground on Thursday.
In the first of the three-match series, hailed as a test for the national team before World Cricket League Division 5, Nepal first failed to utilize the batting foundation and then witnessed strong batting from a ‘tough competitor.’
CAN XI, practically the national team, scored 152 in 46 overs after Binod Das elected to bat first. The visitor’s run-chase was halted by rainfall and their innings reduced to 29 overs.
The target was revised to 112 which they scored in 23.2 overs losing three wickets.
Pakistani openers went untroubled to 39 before Manzoor, who had scored a half-century in his only ODI against Zimbabwe, was caught behind off Binod. He scored 18 off 20 balls with a four and two sixes.
But his partner Raheel Majeed was in different mood and carried his team up to 23rd over. His 64-ball 60 with 10 fours and a six took PCB Academy six runs short of victory and earned him man of the match award.
He fell to off-spinner Sanjam Regmi. The only other man to fall was Ahmed Shehzad (14) - a wicket for left-arm Shakti Gauchan. Captain Khalid Latif (19 off 24) and Ali Asad took PCB to victory.
“The result does not matter much,” Dias commented. “What we needed was exposure and this is a good opportunity for players.”
Earlier, openers Paresh Lohani and Mahesh Chhetri gave Nepal an excellent opening partnering 38 runs in eight overs. Mahesh was then judged leg-before off Wahab Riaz and two runs later Paresh edged Sohail Khan, who has played three ODIs for Pakistan, to Sharfaraz Ahmad.
Paresh scored 23 off 30 balls and hit five boundaries. His momentum was carried by Gyanendra Malla, who looked in touch middling shots and finding gaps. Gyanendra got 45 off 51 balls with seven fours and a six pulled at square-leg. His failure in reading Imad Wasim’s balls saw his stumps castled.
Before that, Sharad Veswakar, who was making half-hearted shots, and vice-captain Paras Khadka fell on seven. Gyanendra fell on 112 as fifth wicket and remaining five went for 50 more runs with only Mehboon Alam (10) and Basant Regmi (14) reaching double-digit.
“The opening was good, but we failed to capitalize,” Nepal’s coach Roy Dias said. “They are tough competitor.”
Wasim was the most successful bowler taking three while Raiz, Khan and Yasir Shah each walked away with two wickets. Khurram Manzoor took a wicket.
The teams play second one-day game on Friday at the same ground.
