Nepal finish fourth after defeat

click here for A comlete website about Nepalese sports Samiullah Shinwari played a heroic knock to guide Afghanistan to a three-wicket win over Nepal in the third-place playoff of the ACC Trophy Elite 2008 at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday. After the batting failure in the semifinal match against UAE on Friday, Nepal made 210/8 after electing to bat first and looked set for victory having reduced Afghanistan to 100/6 in 22.3 overs. But Shinwari added 59 runs for the seventh wicket with No 6 Mohammed Nabi (55 off 56) and unbeaten 54 runs with Ahmad Shah Ahmadi (26 off 27) as Afghanistan inflicted the third consecutive one-day defeat in as many matches on Nepal having defeated it at the same stage in the 2006 edition of the tournament and in the WCL Div 5 semifinal in Jersey earlier this year. Paras Khadka provided double break for Nepal in the eighth over dismissing the Afghan openers Nowroz Mangal (20 off 22) and Shafiqulah Shafaq (27 off 23) off the second and fifth ball after Afghanistan made flying start to its run-chase adding 49 runs. Shakti Gauchan then bowled No 4 Karim Sadiq for a duck two overs later and when Paras dismissed No 5 Asghar Stanikzai (16 off 22), and Raj Kumar Pradhan dismissed No 3 Noor ul Haq (7 of 33) and No 7 Raees Ahmadzai (4 off 13), Nepal looked set for a comfortable victory. But Nabi continued to play aggressively and patient Shinwary played a perfect foil to thwart Nepal. Even when Sanjam Regmi dismissed Nabi after his fiery knock studded with four boundaries and two sixes, Nepal still looked favorite. But No 9 Ahmadi was allowed to play with freedom while Shinwari calmly accumulated the runs to guide Afghanistan home with 10 balls to spare as captain Binod Das failed to prize out the much-needed breakthrough. Earlier, opener Kanishka Chaugain topscored with 43 and most of the other batsmen made useful contributions to take Nepal to 210. Opener Paresh Lohani made 26 off 39 balls with five fours as Nepal added 52 runs for the first wicket in 10.5 overs to vindicate the skipper’s decision to bat first. Kanishka was the second batsman to fall at 87 in the 21st over after hitting seven fours in his 63-ball knock. Sharad Vesawkar (19 off 47), Paras (22 off 29), Gyanendra Malla (21 off 22), Mehboob Alam (12 off 23) and Mahesh Chhetri (29 off 43) all got out after getting starts but Nepal still managed to put up a decent total with Binod making unbeaten 13 off 16 and Sanjam remaining not out on 12 off 15. But the inability of dislodging the lower order batsmen ensured that Nepal lost the match pretty easily in the end.

UAE ON COURSE FOR FIVE IN A ROW

Click here to visit a site about Nepalesesports>>with online chatbox>>TO chat online>>> ACC Trophy Elite 2008 UAE v Nepal Khurram Khan ensured the usual suspects - UAE and Hong Kong - will again be the two non-Test representatives at the next Asia Cup by carrying his side to six-wicket win over Nepal at the Selangor Turf Club today. Picture: Peter Lim The veteran all-rounder has been the UAE's star-turn at the last two editions of the Asia Cup - in Sri Lanka in 2004 and in Pakistan in June. And he cemented their place at the 2010 edition - which could even be played on home soil - as he starred with bat, ball and via some adept leadership in the semi-final win over the plucky Nepalese. Khurram, who was restored to the captaincy for a third spell before this competition in place of Saqib Ali, returned 3-20 with his left-arm orthodox spin, as Nepal wilted against the UAE's slow-bowlers on a helpful pitch. Shadeep Silva, the UAE's Sri Lanka-born spinner, continued his good form in Kuala Lumpur with 2-22, including Nepal’s dangerman Sharad Vesawkar (33). Defeat will have been hard to take for Nepal, who had shown such good form in their group games. Their semi-final hoodoo is starting to become chronic, but their senior side seem closer than ever to matching the successes of their junior teams. Their innings never caught fire, as Khurram’s side strangled them out for 166 in 47.3 overs on a slow, low-bouncing wicket. Vesawkar managed two wickets in reply, as the UAE suffered a mid-innings wobble. Nepal may even have caused a shock if Sanjam Regmi had have held a relatively simple chance when Khurram was on 17. But, buoyed by that let-off, Khurram swept his side to victory with an unbeaten 43, while youngster Rameez Shahzad finished the match in style by hoisting the only six of the game. Nepal confirm place for Semi

Click here to visit a site about Nepalesesports>>with online chatbox>> The results on Tuesday confirmed semifinal berth for Nepal and United Arab Emirates (UAE) while Hong Kong and Afghanistan have a foot into the semifinal going into the last round of match on Wednesday. Nepal’s qualification was confirmed after Qatar beat Kuwait by 24 runs. With the loss, Kuwait chances’ of gaining three wins faded away and now it’s only Hong Kong that can have three wins in four matches while Nepal has won all three matches. UAE qualified after beating hosts Malaysia by 57 runs - their third win since losing to Saudi Arabia in the first match. From their group, Afghanistan has almost ensured it’s place in the semifinal with two wins from three matches. They have a very good run-rate that if they defeat Bahrain on Wednesday, they will proceed at the group leader while UAE will be runners-up. Even if Afghanistan loses, they can proceed on better run rate. In Group B, Hong Kong is likely qualifier. They have a match against Singapore winning which they can qualify without any hassle. If they lose, they can still qualify on run-rate.

Qatar have no answer to Nepal

My website Man of the match Shakti Nepal got yet another victory in ACC Elite trophy. Qatar decided to bat first after winning the toss.It is proving to be the good decision but Nepal got first wicket after 46 runs.Afterwards wickets keep on falling on regular intervals and Qatar were restricted to the total of 171 off 47.2 overs. Basanta Regmi and Shakti Gauchan took 3 wickets each. In reply Nepal got poor start. They lost opener Paresh Lohani in fifth ball of the first over.At one time Nepal were 46 for 3. Then inform batsman Sarad and Gyanendra Malla took responsibility. Sarad scored 51 from 104 balls and Gyanendra scored 76 from 82. They batted till the end and Nepal got the target in 37.3 overs. Shakti Gauchan became the Man of the Match for his economical bowling. He gave only 25 runs in his spell of 10 overs taking 3 wickets.Nepal will face Singapore on Monday. Happy with the win, Nepal’s coach Roy Luke Dias said all the players needed to deliver. “Like Sharad, Basanta, Gyanendra and Shakti, other players also need to perform well,” he said. Team manager Pawan Agrawal praised the players’ patience. “The boys not only performed well but also did not lose concentration even under the pressure situation,” said the former national team captain Agrawal.

Nepal through to semi

ACC Trophy Elite 2008 Nepal v Singapore A 62–run partnership between Paras Khadka and Shakti Gauchan took Nepal to a six-wicket victory over Singapore at the Kinrara Oval. With this victory Nepal are in the semi-finals of the ACC Trophy Elite. Taking first use of the track, Singapore were also up against a team which fielded superbly and allowed their batsmen very little opportunity to be aggressive. Singapore just couldn't get any momentum going at all and with the top-order dismissed within the 13th over the remaining batsmen were as much intent on survival as run-scoring. Mahaboob Alam bowls Glenn Meyer Nepal kept the pressure on. Danger-man Munish Arora bowled by Paras Khadka for just 4 off 19 deliveries. A partnership between Chaminda Ruwan and Christopher Janik where both batsmen looked comfortable against the Nepali bowlers offered hope to Singapore but a poor call by his captain had Janik run-out by short extra-cover. Ruwan (40) went soon after, and none of the remaining Singapore batsmen able to assert themselves against some quality wicket-to-wicket bowling. Singapore's captain Chaminda Ruwan Picture: Peter Lim Batting wasn't easy all day at Kinrara, the wicket having streaks of green and with cracks which had the ball keeping low whenever it landed on them. Plus there is a distinct slope down towards the Road End starting just on a fullish length, which had deliveries throughout the day shooting straight on. Janik, run-out Picture: Peter Lim "We need to bowl very well plus have some luck" to defend 155, said Singapore's Venkatramana. Singapore's opening bowlers Pramodh Raja and Muhammad Ali bowled two ripping break-backs to claim the wickets of Lohani and Chaugai. Had Singapore's wicket-keeper Vivek Vedagiri accepted Vesawkar's outside-edge Nepal before scoring, the ball running down to the boundary, 155 would have looked far away. Paras Khadka hits out Bowl well Singapore did, early on. Raja, Ali and Shoib Razzak moved the ball both ways off the seam early on but once they came out of the attack none of the remaining bowlers threatened Nepal's batsmen. Gyananendra Malla's rush of blood gifted a wicket to Singapore but Khadka (71*) and Gauchan (30*) effortlessly, elegantly, indomitably saw Nepal home. Group B Nepal v Singapore at Kinrara Oval NEPAL WON BY 6 WICKETS Singapore won the toss and chose to bat Singapore: 155-9 off 50 overs (C. Suryawanshi 32, C. Ruwan 40; M. Nepal got rocking start

My website

Nepal, disciplined in batting, bowling and fielding took advantage of every Hong Kong error to win their ACC Trophy opener at the Selangor Turf Club by 44 runs. “We just didn’t turn up today,” said Hong Kong coach Aftab Habib. Nepal’s margin of victory pretty much equated to the number of runs Hong Kong conceded with their lackadaisical fielding. Sharad Vesawkar hits out for Nepal When they were good – Nadeem Ahmed’s slow left arm spin, the boundaries from Butt Hussain, Moner Ahmed, Ilyas Gul, Najeeb Amar and the Ahmed brothers – Hong Kong were very good. When they were bad they were terrible. Up against a well-grooved unit like Nepal, a team has to be its best. Hong Kong, right after their creditable performance in the Asia Cup let the game slip away from them in the second over of the day. Nepal had potentially given Hong Kong a chance to dictate the course of the match by choosing to bat on a wicket dampened by heavy atmospheric conditions. With a wicket lost in the first over (Kanishka Chaugai) to a ball that kept low, Nepal were indeed under pressure. Zain Abbas’s 20-run over which followed lifted that and Paresh Lohani and Sharad Vesawkar were untroubled throughout their 96-run partnership for the second wicket. Butt Hussain catches Mahaboob Alam Two dropped catches and general lack of support for the bowlers along with over-attacking field placing meant that Nepal always had a way to release any pressure building up. Vesawkar was deceived by a beauty from Nadeem Ahmed as he came down the wicket - the ball of the day – and was stumped for 48. Lohani fell three balls later to the crafty Moner Ahmed and the game still hadn’t gone completely away from Hong Kong yet. Nadeem Ahmed bowled beautifully, without much luck, for Hong Kong Nepal’s Paras Khadka made sure it did. Paras Khadka He played beautifully for his 81 – a cautious start, blossoming into an audacious display of power-hitting. He was out at the end of the 48th over with Nepal on 230. Hong Kong had made it too easy for Nepal. “The only time our batsmen got out was when they played shots outside the ‘V’’ said Nepal’s coach Roy Dias, “we gave our wickets away.” Nepal – one dropped chance aside - were close to immaculate in the field. Hong Kong’s schizophrenic cricket continued when they batted. Nadeem Ahmed – opening for the first time for his country – played some spanking drives before he rather tamely scooped a cut to point. Butt Hussain, normally the biggest of hitters, had even his coach bemused by taking 16 balls to get off the mark. Countless times Hussain walked down the wicket only to play a defensive stroke; when he did truly liberate himself he hit the sweetest of sixes right over the head of long-on. He reached his 50 with a six and was stumped the ball after. Batting at 10, Ilyas Gul with 18 in the penultimate over showed what could have been done earlier. Hong Kong didn’t lose by much in the end but they lost the match very early. ACC Trophy Elite 2008, Group B Hong Kong v Nepal at Selangor Turf Club NEPAL WON BY 44 RUNS Nepal won the toss and chose to bat Nepal: 245 for 7 off 50 overs (P. Lohani 42, S. Vesawkar 48, P. Nepal won the second practice match

KATHMANDU, July 18 - Nepal won the second practice cricket match in Sri Lanka defeating Sri Lanka Board XI team by four wickets at the World Bens Club Ground, Colombo on Friday. Electing to bat first, the host team scored 173 in 49.2 overs - the target Nepal achieved in the 40th over losing six wickets. On Thursday, Nepal defeated Sri Lanka Cricket Colts XI by two runs in a 45-over match. For Friday’s victory, Kanishka Chaugai, who had led Nepal U-19 team to plate championship victory in the island country two years ago, scored 62 runs while Shakti Gauchan got 47 runs. Vice-captain Paras Khadka played a handy knock of 26 runs. Captain Binod Das led the bowling by example taking three wickets for 28 runs in his 10 overs while Sarad Vesawkar, who claimed four wickets on Thursday, took two wickets. Paras and Raj Kumar Pradhan each grabbed a wicket as Nepal inflicted three run outs. Nepal scheduled to play in the ACC Elite Cup 2008 in Malaysia from July 25 will play its last practice match on Monday.

Veshwakar's allround performance give victory in first practise match

KATHMANDU, July 17 - Sharad Vesawkar put up an all-round show as Nepal edged Sri Lanka Cricket Board Colts XI by two runs in a practice match played at the St Sebastian College Ground on Thursday. Vesawkar made a classy fifty as Nepal made 248/7 in 45 overs after being put in to bat and then returned with the cherry to scalp four wickets to restrict the Lankans to 246/8 in 45 overs. Nepal owed the big score to a solid 78-run opening start provided by Mahesh Chhetri and Kaniska Chaugain. Chhetri made 52 off 66 balls while Chaugain, making a come back after returning from the United States on a holiday, hit 43 off 55 with five fours and a six. After the fall of openers and Dipendra Chaudhary (0), Vesawkar forged up a crucial partnership with Gyanendra Malla, who made 29 off 24 with a boundary and two sixes, to maintain the momentum. Vesawkar hit three fours and one six in his unbeaten 61-ball innings of 54. Allrounder Paras Khadka (26 off 30) and Shakti Gauchan (28* off 27) then gave Vesawkar company to build up a formidable total. Mehboob Alam (1) and Basanta Regmi (0) were the other batsmen who got chance to bat. Haroon Majood took 4/58 in nine overs for the Lankan side. Chasing the imposing target, the Lankans also made a great start with openers Trevin Fernando (45 off 71) and Rajitha Mendis (51 off 50) adding 88 runs in 17 overs. But Vesawkar turned up with a brilliant nine-over spell taking 4/45 to fashion the narrow win. Sanjam Regmi and Paras were the other wicket-takers getting a wicket each for Nepal which is preparing for the ACC Elite Cup to be held in Malaysia later this month.

WORLD CUP REMAINS DREAM

KATHMANDU, May 30 - Nepal put up a dismal batting performance to bow out of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 tournament with a 37-run semifinal loss at the hands of Afghanistan at the Grainville ground in Jersey on Friday. After the bowlers bowled brilliantly to restrict Afghanistan to 142 in 49.3 overs, Nepali batsmen batted miserably to end Nepal’s remote chances of qualifying for the 2011 World Cup. Afghanistan, which had also dumped Nepal out of the inaugural T20 Asia Cup held in Kuwait in October last year, and the other finalist Jersey will now join Hong Kong, Fiji, Tanzania and Italy in the six-nation ICC WCL Division 4 to be held at the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam from 4 to 11 October to pursue their World Cup dreams. Allrounder Mehboob Alam topscored with 17 off 37 coming in at No 7 but the damage was already done at the top with opening bowler Dawlat Ahmadzai taking three wickets to reduce Nepal to 55/6. It all started with the second ball dismissal of opener Paresh Lohani (0 off 2) followed by the wicket of No 3 Sharad Vesawkar (3 off as Nepal wobbled to 12/2 in 3.5 overs. Opener Mahesh Chhetri (9 off 66) and Shakti Gauchan (9 off 57) then batted painstakingly slow adding just 25 runs in 91 balls to allow the Afghan bowlers to take control of the match. Gyanendra Malla (11 off 34), skipper Binod Das (12 off 32) and Basanta Regmi (10 off 16) were the only other batsmen apart from Alam to reach double figures as Paras Khadka (1 off 9), Sanjam Regmi (5* off 13) and Raj Kumar Pradhan failed to provide the impetus. Gul Abed, Hamid Hassan and Nabi Eisakhil took two wickets each for the winning side. Earlier, M Nabi Eisakhil scored 48 runs off 64 balls to guide Afghanistan to the total after Nepali bowlers took stranglehold of the Afghan innings. Left arm spinners Shakti Gauchan and Basanta snared three wickets but the brakes were put on by the new ball pair of skipper Binod Das and Mehbob Alam. Das took 2/22 in eight overs while Alam got 1/13 in eight to reduce Afghanistan to 29/3 after it was 26 for no loss after electing to bat. Shakti then continued to suffocate the Afghans giving away just 12 in eight overs while Basanta helped himself with late wickets to return figures of 3/30 in 8.3 overs as Afghanistan was bowled out in 49.3 overs. Leg spinner Raj Kumar Pradhan took 1/30 in eight overs. Semi-final line up is decided

29 May 2008 Four teams reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 (WCL Div. 5) in Jersey on Thursday but the quartet all know one thing: only two of them can go forward to Division 4 and the next stage of qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. The final four from the 12 teams that started the event are hosts Jersey, the USA, Nepal and Afghanistan with the semi-finals pairings matching up Jersey and the USA with Nepal facing off against Afghanistan. The winners of Friday’s matches will not only progress through to Saturday’s final but will also join Hong Kong, Fiji, Tanzania and Italy in the six-team ICC WCL Div. 4 set for the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam from 4 to 11 October. Out of the four matches rescheduled for Thursday, the games between Nepal and the USA and Mozambique and Vanuatu were abandoned due to persistent rain while in the other two matches, Singapore beat Japan by 52 runs while using the Duckworth-Lewis scoring method and Germany defeated Norway by six wickets. Singapore, needing to beat Japan by a huge margin to leapfrog Afghanistan on net run-rate, was out of contention for a place in the semi-final after it was restricted to 201 all out in 35.4 overs after being put into bat. A 52-run victory only earned it third place in Group B behind Jersey and Afghanistan. Nepal topped Group A after its match against the USA was abandoned due to rain at the Farmers CC. Nepal, batting first, was restricted to 182 all out in 50 overs and before the USA could start its target chase, rain came down to force a no-result. Nepal captain Binod Kumar Das said his team was confident ahead of its semi-final against Afghanistan. “We are upbeat as we have been playing good cricket. As a team we are very confident of doing well in the semi-final. “One thing we know about Afghanistan is it is inconsistent. It can be world beaters one day and inconsistent other days, so we hope we can have a good day against it.” Das added: “We are not very aware of these things right now as our focus is on the cricket but we heard yesterday that the country was declared a republic so we are proud of that. The people of Nepal wanted that to happen and if we win this tournament and come back home with the trophy we are going to dedicate the win to the people.” Afghanistan captain Norooz Khan Mangal hoped his team would learn from its mistakes and put up an improved performance on Friday. “We are not short of any confidence. The biggest motivation for us ahead of tomorrow’s match is if we win it, we will take a big step forward in our quest to play in the World Cup. “Every team needs time to adjust to new conditions and after playing four matches here, we know what we need to do tomorrow to swing the match in our favour. If experience is on Nepal’s side, then talent and potential is on our side and tomorrow we just need to pull together a good team effort.” The USA captain Steve Massiah said his team was looking ahead at Friday’s semi-final against Jersey with great anticipation. “It is something to look forward to as if we want to move forward from this tournament into the other league and get to the World Cup then we have look to tomorrow’s game with great anticipation. “It will be a tough test as Jersey was unbeaten in the preliminary rounds. As both the teams are in good form, I am sure we will have a good game of cricket.” Massiah said he was pleased with the performance of his team so far but warned his side of complacency. “It would be unfair to the guys not to be pleased after getting a perfect four from four. “We do not fear any opposition and we just try to concentrate on our strengths and realise if we play to our full potential then we will be a hard team to beat. But we have to guard against complacency.” Jersey captain Mathew Hague said: “It should be a really good game as the USA has been in good form and so have we. There is a lot to play for and to get into the final and go to Tanzania would be something really special so we’ll all look forward to it and it should be great.” Hague acknowledged home advantage would be useful, but played down the fact that it would be a big advantage. “I suppose it helps a little bit but all the teams have played over here for a few games now so they should know the conditions.

NEPAL'S WINNING FORM CONTINUES

Nepal entered the semifinals of the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament beating Vanuatu by 137 runs at the Victoria College Ground on Tuesday to record its fourth straight victory. Opener Mahesh Chhetri made 65 as Nepal made 220/9 in 46 overs in the rain-curtailed match and Nepal then bowled out Vanuatu for 83 runs. Nepal plays USA at Les Quennevais 1 ground Wednesday to decide the group winner. Chhetri played a patient innings of 65 from 112 balls while Mehboob Alam made attacking 34 off 19 coming in at No 5 to lay the foundation for a commanding total after Nepal was sent in to bat first. Opener Paresh Lohani made 28 off 34 while No 3 Sharad Vesawkar made 20 off 46. Basanta Regmi made unbeaten 19 off 22 while Gyanendra Malla (12 off 17) and Paras Khadka (11 0ff 6) also made useful contributions. M Nimoho took 3/53 for Vanuatu. Chasing a formidable target for victory, Vanuatu never looked to be going for victory and was behind the required rate right from the beginning. Left arm spinner Basanta Regmi took two wickets for Nepal while Mehboob, Paras, Binod Das, Dhirendra Chand and Sanjam Regmi took one each while one batsman was run out. NEPAL PROVED TO BE TOO STRONG FOR NORWAY

26 May 2008 Nepal proved much too strong for Norway at Farmers Field on Monday, and their 108-run victory virtually guaranteed them a place in Friday’s semi-finals. But at one stage, with the Nepalese on 73 for five, it seemed as if Norway might bowl themselves into a winning position against one of the fancied sides in the tournament. The start was delayed for three-quarters of an hour after more heavy overnight rain had soaked the outfield and seepage had created a wet spot at one end of the pitch, and Norwegian skipper Shahid Ahmed gave his side an early advantage by winning the toss and inviting Nepal to bat. It was a good toss to win, and Ahmed Bhatti soon showed that he had learned something from Sunday’s experience against the USA by testing the Nepalese openers with some aggressive seam bowling. It was his partner Aamir Waheed who achieved the initial breakthrough, however, when Paresh Lohani edged to Syed Munawar Ahmed, the first of five catches for the Norwegian keeper, when the total was 9. Bhatti then removed Vesawkar, and Nepal were 18 for two. Mahesh Chhetri and Shakti Gauchan restored their side’s fortunes somewhat with a stand of 31, but with Zeeshan Ali getting rid of Gauchan, Waheed dismissing Chhetri, and then Bhatti returning to account for Gyanendra Malla, Nepal were in some trouble. Paras Khadka was now joined by Mahaboob Alam, however, and the man who had made history on Sunday by taking all ten wickets against Mozambique set about proving his batting’s value to his side. He and Khadka added 40 for the sixth wicket, and after Khadka gave a simple return catch to Majid Zia Butt, having made 23 from 32 balls, and Basant Regmi soon followed, Alam and skipper Binod Das put on a further 40 for the eighth. Alam steadily made his way to his half-century, making it off 71 balls with five boundaries, but two balls later he became Butt’s third victim, lofting a drive to Abdul Hadi trying to increase the tempo. Das stayed to the end, making 32 off 53 balls, and Nepal were all out for 204 two balls before the scheduled close. Butt finished with three for 23, and Zeeshan Ali with three for 45. Alam and Das began with miserly spells against the Norwegian openers, only seven runs coming off the bat in the first ten overs, and both Zaheer Ashiq and Sameer Sachdev being trapped leg-before by Alam in the process. The scoring rate did not pick up significantly when Dhirendra Bahadur and Khadka entered the attack, and with each bowler claiming two wickets Norway were reduced to 46 for six by the end of the 26th over. Abdul Hadi and Adeel Ibrar survived for ten overs, adding 22 for the seventh wicket, but by this time the match was effectively over. Spinners Sanjam and Basant Regmi were equally economical, and the fact that Norway eventually reached 96 before they were dismissed in the 47th over was in large measure due to some effective hitting from Ahmed Bhatti, who belted two sixes in making an 18-ball, not-out 15. Alam won the Man of the Match award for the second day running, his half-century having been the decisive feature of the game. ALAM'S TEN WICKET HAUL PACKED MOZAMBIQUE FOR 19

25 May 2008 Nepal’s left-arm seamer Mahaboob Alam produced an extraordinary performance at Grainville on Sunday, taking all ten wickets at a cost of 12 runs as Mozambique were bowled out for 19 in 14.5 overs. Alam was on a hat-trick three times in the course of his 7.5 overs, and finished off the innings with four wickets – three of them bowled – in six balls. He bowled straight and full throughout his spell, and four of his victims were out leg-before. Remarkably, in the first attempt to play the match on Saturday, in which Mozambique had been bowled out for 70 before the rain descended, Alam had contributed a wicketless five-over spell as Binod Das and Basant Regmi each collected five-wicket hauls. But on Sunday he was not to be denied, and the Mozambicans had no answer to his mastery of line and length. Mozambique were chasing a Nepalese total of 238 for seven, which represented a good recovery after they had been 30 for three at one stage. Imtiyaz Lili picked up two wickets and Aasif Koliya one, but then Shakti Gauchan and Gyanendra Malla restored the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 73. Gauchan went for 34, but Malla continued in partnership with Paras Khadka, adding 80 for the fifth wicket. Khadka was the next to go, after making 44 off 50 balls with two fours and a six, and Malla was finally out for 71, made from 101 balls with four boundaries. Alam and Basant Regmi pushed the total up to 234, and it had reached 238 by the close. Koliya was the most successful of the Nepalese bowlers with three for 49. The Nepalese total always seemed likely to be too much for Mozambique, but nobody could have reckoned with Alam’s unbelievable achievement. There wasn’t too much doubt about who would win the Man of the Match award. RAIN ACTS AS BIG ENEMY TO NEPAL

Nepal got a comprehensieve victory

KATHMANDU, May 23 - Basanta Regmi and Mehboob Alam each grabbed three wickets as Nepal began the World Cricket League Division 5 campaign strongly defeating Germany by seven wickets at the Les Quennevais Ground, Jersey on Friday. They wrecked the German innings bowled it out for 69 in 39.4 overs. Nepal achieved the target in 20.2 overs with Mahesh Chhetri remaining unbeaten on 23. Man-of-the-match Basanta finished with an impressive figure of 5.5-4-4-3 while new-ball bowler Mehboob, who bowled through his 10-over spell, got three wickets for 24 runs. It was first time after 2001 ICC Trophy that the two country faced each other. Nepal had defeated Germany by two runs in the earlier meeting, but this time it proved strong enough to bowl the European side out for the lowest total of the opening day. Germany won the toss and elected to bat first. With Mehboob firing and captain Binod Das bowling tight line, the Germans were under pressure immediately. Binod got a wicket in the first over and it looked like a lop-sided match within 10 overs. "We probably lost the match in the first 10 overs. They bowled very well," German captain Grammar Sommer said. Asif Khan topscored for Germany with 22 runs. Once spinners came into action, it was more difficult for the Europeans to get runs. Shakti Gauchan bowled seven overs giving away just six runs for a wicket while Raj Kumar Pradhan gave 11 runs for a wicket in three overs. Nepal's batting was not on par with its bowling as Paresh Lohani failed to open account. Sharad Vesawkar (12) and Shakti Gauchan (11) got starts but failed to stay long. But opener Mahesh Chhetri scored 23 off 54 balls to guide Nepal to victory. Gyanendra Malla remained unbeaten on three runs. "I am happy for my team. It's important for us to get good start and we got it," Binod said. "We did well with the bowling but we could have batted better. Anyway, a win is a win and it came so comfortably for us." "We are obviously disappointed but we are happy that we picked up three wickets," Sommer said. In other matches, USA beat Mozambique by nine wickets after restricting it to 148/7 in 50 overs; Norway beat Vanuatu by 177 runs; Botswana defeated Bahamas by 70 runs and Afghanistan edged Japan by 70 runs. Nepal faces Mozambique at the Victoria College Ground in its second match on Saturday.

NEPAL WITH A GREAT START

On their way to Jersey for the World Cricket League Division 5, Nepal stopped at Guernsey for two-friendly matches both of which they won comfortably. Nepal beat Bahamas by 201 runs before beating hosts Guernsey by 70 runs. Nepal scored 209/7 in 50 overs and bowled out Guernsey for 139. Against Guernsey, Nepal were at one stage in the mire at 65 for 5 against some excellent Guernsey bowling. They were rescued by a partnership of 103 between Sarad Veswakar and Mehboob Alam, the latter providing the impetus with 45 off 59 balls with Veswakar making 72 from 139 balls. Basant Regmi remained unbeaten on 20 while Binod Das got 15 not out. Guernsey were well aware of the potency of Nepal’s seam attack and Alam struck immediately with the wicket of Mark Jefferies with one of his big inswingers. The wickets of Smit, Oliver and Ravenscroft followed quickly and Guernsey were soon four down with only 40 on the board. Skipper Stuart Le Prevost with a hard fought 41 and Jeremy Frith with 24 steadied the ship and were rebuilding nicely before the injured Frith, batting with a runner, was run out. Le Prevost kept going and appeared unlucky to be given leg before. With his dismissal the home side’s chances were fading and Rajkumar Pradhan’s legbreaks wrapped things up with 4 for 36. Mehboob and Paras Khadka each took two wickets. The match was a very useful exercise for both teams. Guernsey competed very well and the real difference between the two sides was the sheer quality of Nepal’s seam attack which could be too much for most of their opponents in Jersey. Nepal knew that they had been tested by a decent Guernsey side seeking to demonstrate that it would not be out of its depth at WCL Division 5 level. The massive gulf between these two teams and the Bahamas suggests that the Bahamas will struggle in Jersey and that Nepal will be strongly fancied to reach the final. Bahamas lost to Guernsey too. Earlier, Nepal crushed the Bahamas by 201 runs at the Port Soif ground. Nepal batted first and made 272 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs. Paras Khadka top scored with an unbeaten 63 while Shakti Gauchan with 50 and Gyanandra Malla with 48 were the other main contributors. G Armstrong (2 for 19) and N Ekanyake (2 for 42) returned the best figures for the Bahamas. The Bahamas got off to an awful start and were 6 for 3 after 4 overs. Then 60 for 6 before being dismissed for 71 in 31 overs. C Atkinson (19) and M Ford (18) were their top scorers as Mehaboob Alab (2 for 16 in 6 overs), Binod Das (2 for 20 in 6 overs) and Rajkumar Pradam (3 for 19 in 9.4 overs) ran through them.

Nepal Grab an amazing win

Spinners helped Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) XI registered an upset victory over visiting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy in the final of three one-day matches at the TU Cricket Ground on Sunday. Brought in after the visitors hit 47 runs of first two overs while chasing lowly 136 for victory, the spinners did the trick for Nepal and the stand-in captain Paras Khadka walked away with praise for his experimental decisions that proved successful. PBC Academy were bowled out for 121 in 28.3 overs with off-spinner Sanjam Regmi emerging the hero with a more than impressive figure of 8.3-4-6-5. Basant Regmi took three for 28 in 8 overs while Shakti Gauchan and Sarad Vesawkar each grabbed a wicket. Ahmed Shahzad hit pacer Amrit Bhattarai for five fours in the first over while his partner Raheel Majeed hit four boundaries and a six off Dhirendra Chand in the second over that also included a bye four. With 47/0 after 12 balls, PCB looked like cruising to a quick victory before lunch but Paras brought in Shakti and Basant. Shakti got Majeed (27 off 14 with five fours and a six) in the last over before lunch and Shahzad (32 off 25 with seven fours) holed out one off Basant to Sarad in the first over after lunch to make it 65/2. Six balls later, Basant claimed Khurram Manzoor (1) to make it 76/3 and it was splendid bowling of Sanjam then after. Pakistanis continued trying to be aggressive while Sanjam’s turn along with innovative field placing by Paras checked runs. Captain Khalid Latif was trapped leg-before at 20 off 22 by Sanjam and he was the third and last man to score in double-digit. The PCB Academy ended at 121 – 15 runs short of CAN XI’s score after Sanjam got Sohail Khan (6) caught by Sarad and thousands of fans stormed into field to celebrate the amazing comeback victory. Earlier, Paras won the toss and elected to bat first. Playing without regular captain Binod Das and star allrounder Mehboob Alam, Nepali team was pegged down right from second over when Gyanendra Malla was trapped by Mohamad Aamir. Aamir, playing his first match on the tour, got five of first six wickets – Paresh Lohani (11) falling to Wahab Riaz to wreck the innings. Nepal went down to 45/6 in 12th over and it looked like it was heading for an embarrassing batting performance before Shakti Guachan rescued the team. Shakti stayed cool and partnered Mahesh Regmi for 56 runs taking Nepal past three-digit before Mahesh, who was dropped down the order, fell to Imad Wasim, He scored 20 off 50 balls with a four. Sanjam Regmi (5) and Amrit Bhattarai (6) stayed long enough to help Shakti complete a half-century, the lone by Nepali batsman in the series. Shakti’s unbeaten 50 was scored in 109 balls with five fours and a six. Aamir was pick of te bowler with 5/28 while Shahzad took 2/18 off his seven overs.

CAN XI LOST FIRST MATCH

May 08, 2008 WCL Div V Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Academy registered an easy seven-wicket victory in a rain-interrupted match against Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) XI at the TU Cricket Ground on Thursday. In the first of the three-match series, hailed as a test for the national team before World Cricket League Division 5, Nepal first failed to utilize the batting foundation and then witnessed strong batting from a ‘tough competitor.’ CAN XI, practically the national team, scored 152 in 46 overs after Binod Das elected to bat first. The visitor’s run-chase was halted by rainfall and their innings reduced to 29 overs. The target was revised to 112 which they scored in 23.2 overs losing three wickets. Pakistani openers went untroubled to 39 before Manzoor, who had scored a half-century in his only ODI against Zimbabwe, was caught behind off Binod. He scored 18 off 20 balls with a four and two sixes. But his partner Raheel Majeed was in different mood and carried his team up to 23rd over. His 64-ball 60 with 10 fours and a six took PCB Academy six runs short of victory and earned him man of the match award. He fell to off-spinner Sanjam Regmi. The only other man to fall was Ahmed Shehzad (14) - a wicket for left-arm Shakti Gauchan. Captain Khalid Latif (19 off 24) and Ali Asad took PCB to victory. “The result does not matter much,” Dias commented. “What we needed was exposure and this is a good opportunity for players.” Earlier, openers Paresh Lohani and Mahesh Chhetri gave Nepal an excellent opening partnering 38 runs in eight overs. Mahesh was then judged leg-before off Wahab Riaz and two runs later Paresh edged Sohail Khan, who has played three ODIs for Pakistan, to Sharfaraz Ahmad. Paresh scored 23 off 30 balls and hit five boundaries. His momentum was carried by Gyanendra Malla, who looked in touch middling shots and finding gaps. Gyanendra got 45 off 51 balls with seven fours and a six pulled at square-leg. His failure in reading Imad Wasim’s balls saw his stumps castled. Before that, Sharad Veswakar, who was making half-hearted shots, and vice-captain Paras Khadka fell on seven. Gyanendra fell on 112 as fifth wicket and remaining five went for 50 more runs with only Mehboon Alam (10) and Basant Regmi (14) reaching double-digit. “The opening was good, but we failed to capitalize,” Nepal’s coach Roy Dias said. “They are tough competitor.” Wasim was the most successful bowler taking three while Raiz, Khan and Yasir Shah each walked away with two wickets. Khurram Manzoor took a wicket. The teams play second one-day game on Friday at the same ground.
